Abidjan is the economic and former official capital of Côte d'Ivoire (the current capital is Yamoussoukro). It is the largest city in the nation, and the third largest French speaking city in the world. It has, according to the authorities of the country in 2006, 5,068,858 residents in the metropolitan area and 3,796,677 residents in the municipality. Only Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria has a larger number of inhabitants in this region. Considered a cultural hub of West Africa or Africa, Abidjan in the 21st century is characterized by high industrialization and urbanization. The city stands in Ébrié Lagoon on several converging peninsulas and islands, connected by bridges.
The Ébrié Lagoon lies in Côte d'Ivoire, separated for most of its length from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow coastal strip. The 100 km (60 mi) long lagoon is linked to the sea by the Vridi Canal, while the Comoë River flows into it. The lagoon averages 4 km (2½ mi) in width, and 5 m (16 ft) in depth. Abidjan and towns such as Grand Bassam, Bingerville, Jacqueville and Tiagba lie on the lagoon.
The 1992 African Cup of Nations was the 18th edition of the African Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa (CAF). It was hosted by Senegal. The field expanded to twelve teams, split into four groups of three; the top two teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals. Côte d'Ivoire won its first championship, beating Ghana on penalty kicks 11-10 after a goalless draw.

Abobo is one of the most populated communes in the country with about 1 500 000 inhabitants in an area of 9 000 ha (90 km2), a density of 167 inhabitants per hectare. It is home to a railway station located on the road linking Côte d'Ivoire to Burkina Faso, and a bus station.Air Ivoire is an airline headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.[1] It is the national airline and operates scheduled domestic and regional services. Its main base is Port Bouet Airport, Abidjan[2].
