History of the
European Union

1 and 2 December: European summit in The Hague. This was the first summit of the EEC's heads of state and government during which far-reaching decisions were reached (former summits were purely ceremonial). The two most important results of this summit were the compromise on the financing of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the acquiescence of French President Georges Pompidou to the opening of accession negotiations with Great Britain and three other northern European countries.[1]

22 January: Signing of the treaties of accession by Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland and Norway. While Norwegian voters later in the year rejected the treaty in a referendum the three other states joined the EC on 1 January 1973.

The Associated Press (AP) is an American news agency. The AP is a cooperative owned by its contributing newspapers, radio and television stations in the United States, which both contribute stories to the AP and use material written by its staff journalists. Many newspapers and broadcasters outside the United States are AP subscribers, paying a fee to use AP material without being contributing members of the cooperative.Belarus en-us-Belarus.ogg /ˈbɛləruːs/ (Belarusian: Беларусь or Biełaruś, Russian: Беларусь) is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe,[3] bordered by Russia to the north and east, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the north. Its capital is Minsk; other major cities include Brest, Grodno (Hrodna), Gomel (Homiel), Mahilyow (Mahiloŭ) and Vitebsk (Viciebsk). Forty percent of the country is forested,[4] and its strongest economic sectors are agriculture and manufacturing.

Brussels (French: Bruxelles, pronounced [bʁyˈsɛl]  ( listen); Dutch: Brussel, pronounced Nl-Brussel.ogg [ˈbrʏsəl] ), officially the Brussels Region or Brussels-Capital Region[1][2] (French: Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, Dutch: About this sound Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest ), is the de facto capital city of the European Union (EU) and the largest urban area in Belgium.[6][7] It comprises 19 municipalities, including the City of Brussels proper, which is the capital of Belgium, Flanders and the French Community of Belgium.[8]The European Union (EU) is an association of 27 independent member states. The Administration of the Union has a parliament, a civil service and a judiciary that is distinct from those of the member states. These arms administer the application of treaties, laws and agreements between the member states and their expenditure on common policies throughout the Union. To pay for this, the EU had an agreed budget of €120.7 billion for the year 2007 and €864.3 billion for the period 2007-2013,[1] representing 1.10% and 1.05% of the EU-27's GNI forecast for the respective periods. By comparison, the UK expenditure for 2004 alone was estimated at about €759 billion and France was estimated at about €801 billion. In 1960, the budget of the six member state EEC was 0.03% of GDP.[2]Bulgaria aims to join the euro zone as soon as possible. The country has set itself a target date of 1 January 2013.[1], though generally dates vary between 2013 and 2014 [2]. The euro coins have not been designed yet, but the motif for all coins has been chosen to be the Madara Rider.
